Bug Description

When trying to import movie files from iPhones, incorrect media creation date and time is displayed. Instead of actual creation date and time, the program shows import date and time.

This only applies to movie files.

Thank you for your by report. I need more information before the bug report can be useful:

Which version of Rapid Photo Downloader are you using? If you are using the 0.9 series, attach the log file found in ~/.cache/rapid-photo-downloader/log
What movie file format does the iPhone create?
What version of the iPhone are you using?

Just downloaded it from your website, using version 0.9.0a6.

Using Iphone 5s with iOS 10.0.2. Not sure about the file format, but the file ending is .mov.

The log file is attached.

Some more info: I've noticed that when hovering over thumbnails of movies in the app, the info says "taken on [import date and time]" and "modified on [creation date]".

This problem might not be easy to fix. Rapid Photo Downloader uses two libraries to extract the metadata from movies - mediainfo, and ExifTool. Judging by the log file, it looks like they're both having problems. However I'll see if anything can be tweaked.

Can you make a small sample movie (just a few seconds is fine) and then attach it to this bug report?

Attached a sample movie as per request. It's imported using the app and displays incorrect creation time.

For photos and videos, the Creation Time is extracted from the file's metadata.

The bug is caused by the fact that when scanning a device on a camera, to increase performance while extracting file metadata, the scan process downloads only the first part of a file. Downloading only part of the file works very well most of the time. However in the case of the iPhone 5 movies, based on the sample file you've provided, it doesn't work at all, because the entire file has to be read before any metadata can be extracted.

I'll need to modify the scan process to take this problem into account.

I plan on releasing alpha 7 very soon. When it's released please let me know if the bug is fixed. I think it is fixed, but I have no way of testing it because I don't own an iPhone. Thanks.
