Bug Description
We need to add a test framework (hooked into "make check"). I've added a copy of Google's test framework in trunk, but it still needs adding into the build.

OK, I've finally managed to hook up the test infrastructure in r157.
@Jonny - please can you let me know whether it works on Mac? Once it is working, let's close this report and start working on the tests themselves. I'll create a blueprint to track progress.
