Bug Description

Having the need to install it on a new machine I noticed Unity Dash on the desktop doesn't consider Ubuntu SDK as an available application. I can only see QtCreator and it won't pull in the Ubuntu components plugin either.

I would expect that typing "Ubuntu SDK" in the app lens allows me to install it.

Also in the Software Center, 'Ubuntu SDK' should install 'ubuntu-sdk', not just 'qtcreator-plugin-ubuntu'.

This is not bug 1180192 - it works after installing just fine. But it won't be suggested to install before that.

affects: ubuntu-ui-toolkit → qtcreator-ubuntu

True. On a clean machine, it should be possible to search 'Ubuntu' or 'SDK' and find 'ubuntu-sdk' to install, preferably with an Ubuntu icon.

Is it because the Software Center considers it as a technical application and it hides it for installation somehow? I.e. similarly to what it does in the SC client for installable libraries and such.

no longer affects: software-center

I don't know the details of how SC works / gets the list of installable apps, but something in this equation probably matters:
- qtcreator-plugin-ubuntu is the package that ships ubuntu-sdk.desktop (name "Ubuntu SDK", executes qtcreator)
- qtcreator-plugin-ubuntu, even if it would be installable, would not pull all of the SDK in
- 'ubuntu-sdk' - the package that should be installed when a person searches and installs for SDK, is just a meta-package itself, and does not ship any .desktop file

This is now fixed in lp:qtcreator-plugin-ubuntu, but not yet uploaded to saucy.

So when using the SDK Release PPA, which equals to what we will have after the next upload, 'Ubuntu SDK' if found via both Software Center manually and on the Applications lens in Dash. When installed via Dash, qtcreator-plugin-ubuntu gets installed but because it now Recommends: ubuntu-sdk, also the full SDK is installed.
