Bug Description

It would be useful to split window, either vertically or horizontally, to be able to read two documents in two different tabs, side by side. I know it can currently be achieved using two different windows, but it becomes more complicated when using the --unique options (for instance when I compile a tex document), because it is not currently possible to detach a tab from a window. Allowing to split the window would a be good alternative, probably simpler to implement, because everything remains in the same process.

Hello Charles,

as with the other bug report about moving tabs between windows, this goes into a range which we currently do not feel comfortable maintaining in qpdfview. Hence I will keep this around as a wish list bug but do not expect any actual development any time soon.

Best regards, Adam.

Hello again Charles,

we do have split tabs since this bug was filed. Could you give that a try using the daily deb and check whether it is sufficient for your use case? Thank you.

Best regards,
Adam

Testing an updated trunk build, revision 2127, as a Flatpak package.

The split view seems to be working but it's hidden in the right-click context menu. It should be accessible via a toolbar button, maybe a tri-state toggle button for off, vertical, and horizontal.

A change in sync split view setting seems to require app restart, at least from enabled to disabled state. This also should be easily togglable from the toolbar and not hidden in the settings window.

Split view is not restored on startup, and the files that were opened in the split view are moved to separate tabs.

A feature that is missed is being able to select two opened tabs and merge them to a split view. This should be at least available in the right-click context menu.
