Bug Description

this bug is a follow-up of bug #20732 where i mentioned this problem, while i
was able to work around the main part of bug #20732.
furthermore, according to my search, this bug here is related to bug #14473,
which seems to offer a solution but i don't know how to apply it.
problem: when i load the ubuntu live session i can set up all sorts of details
for my screen, but when it comes to starting the xserver, the display turns off
and i cannot access any text-terminals on ctrl-alt-f1 to -f6. In bug #14473 the
display works at 1400x1050 resolution while this doesn't work for me with
ubuntu. But on fedora core 3 and 4, my display works but only at a resolution of
1400x1050, as reported in bug #14473.

As the solution to bug #14473 seems to offer a solution i would like this bug to
be assigned to the same debugger, Daniel Stone. Thanks.

could you please try to get the /var/log/Xorg.0.log from the live session and
attach it to this bug? thanks.

sorry, i couldn't catch the /var/log/Xorg.0.log file you requested. when i set up the live session options i can access a terminal and
the file has not been written until i confirm the final option. the system then starts up and at the end when the xserver should be
started, the monitor turns itself off. but the computer is still running. the fan speed is still regulated and the usb stick is still
alight, which seems to be normal at linux even though is is dismounted. i tried to use an external monitor but the result is the same.

I am using the following options to start:

live-expert noapic nolapic hw-detect/start_pcmcia=false

these options are required to start the os as i quoted in the workaround dor bug #20732.

when it comes to setting up the xserver options i give the following options

1. graphics driver: "ati"
2. the system recognises my graphics card and suggests that "ati Radeon mobility x700" is my graphics card, which is correct
3. i accept "PCI:1:0:0" which the set-up suggests (i don't know anything better)
4. video memory in kB: "131072"
5. use framebuffer: "no"
6. suggested resolutions: 1680x1050, 1400x1050, 1024x768 (other settings apart don't seem to influence the result)
7. optimal resolution: "1680x1050@75Hz"
8. bit: "24"
9. Runlevel: i tried to leave this field empty as i don not exactly know what this means and another time i tried "5". the result was
equal:
10. the system starts up and the terminal is no longer accessible
