Bug Description
The Abstract Base Class is not the right place to perform those tests. It must be up to the adapter to ensure the user gets an exception when trying to work on a non-existing record, or trying to add an existing record.
This would also be a problem in database adapters, which would need to issue at least two queries per action requested.
