Ooh, actually there are a couple of reasons why it wouldn't be this easy.

First of all, "bdist_egg" isn't a command of distutils, so we would have to patch pyOpenSSL to use setuptools for that purpose. Secondly, it looks like such bdists are dynamically linked against libcrypto and/or libssl, at least on Mac OS X -- I haven't looked at other platforms yet. Therefore, while doing this *would* relieve users of having to have openssl development headers installed, it would not relieve them of the need to have the right version of libssl and libcrypto .so's installed.

So, further study is warranted...
