Bug Description

After upgrading libgtk-2.0-0 to version 2.6.0-1ubuntu1 and gnomevfs2 to version
2.9.2-0ubuntu4, I can't make GNOME display any jpeg/png file.

Every try to make eog display any JPEG/PNG results in nothing. The same thing
happens with gnome-background-properties.

I tried to recreate gdkpixbuf info file (/etc/gtk-2.0/gdk-pixbuf.loaders)
without success.

Running gnomevfs-info on the images results in

Name : rails_1600.jpg
Type : Regular
MIME type : application/octet-stream

[Currently running Hoary]

do you have any error in ~/.xsession-errors or if you run eog from a console ?

No, nothing.

hum, all seems to be fine ...
Do you have a full hoary system or you upgraded versions of gtk and gnomevfs ?
Are you running xorg ? Is the composite extension activated ?
could you attach your /etc/gtk-2.0/gdk-pixbuf.loaders to the bug ?

I'm running a full hoary, except for some meta-packages (like ubuntu-base),
removed when I switched from 'sysklogd' and 'klogd' to 'syslog-ng' and 'postfix'
to 'esmtp'.
Running X.org '2 October 2004 + 6.8.x branch CVS' with no composite (enabling it
on my Neomagic makes X.org comes to a crawl).

hum, possible but it should not break every single application.

does a "sudo update-mime-database /usr/share/mime/" fix the issue ?

Julio Biason (julio-biason) wrote :

Hey! The update last night fixed everything. Now eog shows the images, I can
change the background and gnomevfs-info shows the images as 'image/jpeg'.

Too bad I can't remember what was upgraded...

Feel free to mark it as 'INVALID' or something.

you have probably installed a package overwritting the mime database.

Do you get any output for this command "dpkg -S /usr/share/mime/magic" ?

thanks. the mimebase has been overwritten by this package, I'm changing the bug
title according to this.
