At first, ColonyFS was envisioned as a local-area or cluster file system, with primary focus on scalability, consistency and fault-tolerance. Instead of devoting dedicated servers for file service, we envisioned much more economical and scalable solution using commodity hardware. Even though design decision were aimed at local usage requirements, we opted to take a much more generic approach with purpose to make the file system easily modifiable for different type of environment, such as Wide Area Network. Future work will most definitely leverage some of the primitives provided by Harmony's API, such as test-and-set or locking mechanisms, in order to strengthen concepts of consistency and privacy.
