gcc needs packaging changes to get backported.
For example it mustn't build library packages (e.g. libstdc++6) that already exist in precise.

Hello,

It seems that Matthias Klose already has done a backport of gcc-4.7 for precise:
https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-toolchain-r/+archive/test/+sourcepub/3113291/+listing-archive-extra

Can we re-use is packages for the backporting?

There is not that many information around on backporting, or I am unable to find it, so I am a little bit lost on how to appriach this. Should I rebackport it myself for different platforms? What is the next step to get this into the backports?

Kind regards,

Thomas

what advantage is there having it in -backports instead of having it in a PPA?

That many companies only add backports to the apt sources (including mine of course : ) and it is easier to manage for large computer pools

Hello,

there seem to be already many ppa's supplying a backport of gcc-4.7 from quantal to precise, e.g., ppa:george-edison55/gcc4.7-precise. Can we reuse this work or should it be done from scratch?

Can somebody please inform me on what the next step in the backporting process should be? As I see it, we have a backport of gcc-4.7, so it should no "only" be added to the backports?

Kind regards,

Thomas
