Bug Description

Please backport amd64-microcode 2.20131007.1+really20130710.1 (multiverse) from trusty

Reason for the backport:
========================

The package is important for stability and reliability of AMD systems where the BIOS does not supply up-to-date microcode.

Testing:
========
Mark off items in the checklist [X] as you test them, but please leave the checklist so that backporters can quickly evaluate the state of testing.

You can test-build the backport in your PPA with backportpackage:
$ backportpackage -u ppa:<lp username>/<ppa name> -s quantal -d precise amd64-microcode

* precise:
[x] Package builds without modification
[] amd64-microcode installs cleanly and runs

No reverse dependencies

I second that, it will need the updated kernel 3.4 patch as well. What this actually does is reduce temperature of amd cpus, especially the quad core ones on laptops by fully implementing AMD Quiet N' Cool and also controls fan speed thereby reducing noise and life of fan and increasing CPU life as well.

The AMD64 microcode updates do not depend at all on any kernel 3.4 patches. Don't mix issues, please.

Anyway, I am a Debian Developer, so the Precise backport will have to be handled by an Ubuntu developer. The package should be trivial to backport (actually, it probably works as-is).

If one installs kernel 3.4+ one gets missing microcode message on bootup, installing the requisite microcode package removes that message.

Tested amd64-microcode 1.20120910-1 backport quantal to precise. Works without issue.

We're actually going to SRU a fix from raring to quantal and prepare a new backport based on that. If I could get this retested once the new backport is available, that would be great.

Micah, that backport never landed. The linux-firmware package briefly took over the amd64-microcode but it has since been split off again.

Sorry, it seems this fell through the cracks, I apologize. I've uploaded a new backport from trusty to my PPA (ppa:micahg/ppa). It should build shortly. If someone can do a quick install/run test on this package (or your own backport from trusty), I can upload this in the near future to precise-backports. Thanks.
