Here is a patch to follow DanRabbit mockup of the message list, with a new CellRenderer.

It should work for gtk2 and gtk3, I finally ported it to gtk2 since we have conditional compilation now…

There's some missing spaces around brackets, I'm fixing those up because I like your patch too much to reject it for style :-D

The date seems to be slightly too high, it should line up with the subject.

Should only the sender's name be highlighted for unread messages?

Now for enhancement, not a bug in the renderer: merge important and reply/ forward renderer and no 'unread' icon, instead only 'replies > 0' to see if it's unread or not.

I'll commit shortly.

Committed with style fixes. And I put the CellRenderer in a new file, and named it CellRendererConvo.

Another thing: flagged messages are red now, which I originally expect to be used for priority messages (marked by the sender). Should both have the same color? Or another color, such as green for flagged?

I merged unread into replies, which now means "new replies", while Replied and Forwarded take the left side unless it's starred.
Red color is only used for priority messages.
Excerpts always use the normal color.
