It would be great if Postler supported DockManager so that we could get a nice badge showing unread message count :)

I implemented Dock.Manager and Dock.Item classes which talk to the org.freedesktop.DockManager interface. The badge shows the same value as the notification bubbles do.

Open questions:

"Compose message" menu item on right-click - Awn duplicates menu items when starting the service a second time. The only option is to remove items on exit of the service which I don't find sufficient.
I need to test with Docky and unstable Awn to see if it works there.

Alternative DBus name net.launchpad.DockManager. I need to test this and possibly add code to handle the different name.

We do use the new DBus name, there's no decision if we want menu items albeit nobody asked about it so it doesn't seem so.
