documentation incomplete: Phase.stats_samples

The property Phase.stats_samples is mentioned in the reference, but not explained.

I assume it defines samples which should be taken in that phase.
What happens if no StatsSample object is assigned to a phase? Will polygraph take no samples and doesn't show that phase in the report later on?
