We intend on showing a dedicated "Downloads" view where you will see a list of all the episodes you downloaded. That help you track and delete the unnecessary ones. Displaying the number of downloaded podcasts doesn't seem to be of much use unless I am missing something. Care to reason why you need this?
I often download a bunch of episodes when they are in the 'new' section and listen to them later, when they are not listed there any more. It would just be nice to have an overview of downloaded episodes and not having to navigate to every podcast page individually to know if there are any downloaded episodes. This is not really an issue, but I think it would not be to intrusive or destroy the design. Maybe you can put it on the wishlist and implement it when there is more interest.
The reason I am hesitant about adding this feature is that, if I display a bubble with the number of downloads, it could easily be mistaken for the number of new episodes. Other podcasts apps that I have observed, show the number of new episodes in the podcasts list. I will think this over and see how to implement it.
I just saw that you added a "Downloaded" section to the episodes page in Podbird Devel. That totally fits my use case. If you plan to use it in the stable version, I would see the bug as fixed ;) Thanks for your good work.
