Bug Description

Currently Plank just uses standard GNOME menus. It would be cool if it had menus which looked like those in Docky: semi-transparent with rounded corners and a triangle pointing to the corresponding dock item.

In my opinion there is no reason to do this. Gtk is themeable so it's better to use it's potential porting to Gtk3.
Apps themes basically looks ugly when they are different from rest of UI. I don't like also themed labels upper the icons and it would be great to make it looks like any other application.

You're welcome to your opinion, but we disagree.

I agree with robert here. The custom transparent menus in docky looked really nice and fit in pretty well regardless of theme.

Unity's dock also has custom looking menus.

Would it be possible to use Granite's popovers here? It seems that it would be almost trivial to implement them.

We are still trying to keep compatibility with gtk+2.0 and granite is heavily relying on gtk+3.0

May I ask why are you trying to keep the gtk2 compatibility? I'm guessing it's already harder to build plank on gtk2 only environments, since there aren't any new builds in the ppa for old ubuntu releaseses.

GTK3 was not included by default until 11.10 (I think). We support current release of Ubuntu, plus the 2 prior (or the last LTS release, whichever is oldest). Thus, we need to keep supporting GTK2.

Since we dropped the GTK2 support we can just theme the menu-window using CSS now.

Agreed that the themed menus looked better in Docky.
If now we can theme them with CSS that would make it far easier to do this actually for someone with CSS knowledge.

I'm not familiar with the source structure in Plank, but if I was given a hint of what file to change I could make some CSS for this in no time. If someone knows about this, let me know, see if we can get this themed menus!

Cheers.
