Applications without a .desktop file do not show up in Plank

I just installed eclipse on my laptop and running it from the commandline it did not show up in Plank, I only noticed it when I minimised the application so I had to use ALT-TAB to get it back on my screen.

After creating an eclipse.desktop file in /usr/share/applications it did show up in Plank.

Plank build on Gentoo Linux from trunk.

We need to investigate, this might be a BAMF issue.

Applications with a .desktop file also do not display icons from custom locations either. I think it is the same issue.

I've just reinstalled Kubuntu 13.04 and installed Plank, and only the Chrome icon is showing.
Even the plank icon isn't showing. No dolphin, no Kate, Konsole, etc.
Please don't make me use another dock :-(
Looking forward to instructions on how to fix this (it works fine before in my Xubuntu).
Let me know if you need to know the versions of anything already installed.

I've done a quick test and it seems to be resolved :-)
