Bug Description

shutter is not install on 20.04
It may need a new PPA to install it.

missing shutter is not fatal.

But keeping the screenshot feature is a nice to have.

Ideas welcome

For what it's worth, it looks like popey snapped shutter:

shutter 0.94.3 popey - Feature-rich screenshot program

  latest/stable: 0.94.3 2020-05-19 (27) 116MB -
  latest/candidate: ↑
  latest/beta: ↑
  latest/edge: 0.94.3 2020-10-05 (38) 116MB -

so that may be a way to get shutter installed and preserve existing jobs, vs changing tools and editing the jobs accordingly.

I came across this problem while testing lp:1893161.

I tried installing the snap mentioned:

snap install shutter

The problem is... it doesn't work. You can launch it from the Activities, but you cannot use it as a CLI tool. Whenever I invoke it from the cli, it says:

-----
shutter:86080): Unique-DBus-WARNING **: Unable to open a connection to the session bus: /usr/bin/dbus-launch terminated abnormally with the following error: EOF in dbus-launch reading address from bus daemon

(shutter:86080): Unique-DBus-WARNING **: Unable to connect to the running instance, aborting.

INFO: There is already another instance of Shutter running!
-----

even though there are no other instances of Shutter running...

The same problem happens if I run the Checkbox job that takes screenshots (see attachment).

I guess we need a better way to take and store screenshots in 20.04+. We may also need to re-discuss the needs and values to take screenshots.

For snap based checkbox, a solution could be based on mss[1] which we already used in the https://code.launchpad.net/checkbox-desktop-snaps/+git project for the desktop team.
