The test should check if it is mounted, and mount it if not.

It also happens on /dev/sda for some devices (for example /dev/sdb is a SSD with the root partition, /dev/sda is a big unmounted HDD).

    /dev/sda is a block device
    Error: /dev/sda: unrecognised disk label
    Error: /dev/sda: unrecognised disk label
    /dev/sda reports a size of 1000GB.
    /dev/sda is not mounted. It must be mounted before testing.
