In Toosl->Options, Language Settings -> Languages, I have to change "Default language for documents", "Western" from "German (Austria)" to "English (UK)" (or US); these are the only available languages (with an icon).

Not sure about this, though. My locale is German, but only the English word lists are on the CD. It's just strange that it works on ppc, I will check that default setting there the next time.

ppc/live (with German locale, but only English language pack/support available) defaults to English(USA) spell checking.

I'm rejecting this bug since the current behaviour makes sense. Using an English spell checker in a German locale (if the German dictionaries are not installed) doesn't make much sense.
