Can you please write what is your Pinta version and operating system version? There was a lot of problem with text in previous versions. If you don't have the latest Pinta 1.0 version, please check the http://www.pinta-project.com/download.ashx web site.

Just a note, I see very similar problem in "ideas page" for support of Greek characters - also displaying a, b, c instead of alfa, beta..., see more: http://pinta.uservoice.com/forums/105955-general/suggestions/2460024-add-support-to-work-with-greek-characters

Also I have tried to write German umlauts with my keyboard, but instead of ä,ü and ö letters a, u and o are typed-in. Most probably all of this problems are related. Beside Chinese characters, Greek, German and others characters should be tested.

summary: - chinese characters can not be typed in in the pinta text tool.
+ Chinese characters can not be typed in Text tool.

I also tested all special characters that can be typed in using <AltGr>+some_key and most of combinations are not working, so no character displayed or just English letter instead.

P.S. <AltGr> on my keyboard is probably right <Alt> on English keyboard.

Hi, strange because altgr +E = € and it work for me.
^⁺u = û
altgr + $ = ø
work too

have you got some example that I can use on my test ?

I have sent a new commit which hopefully will make it working...
can you test it?

Oliver, I have looked at Github, but there is no update in Pinta master branch. Is your code already merged into master branch?

I made bellow test on Pinta latest development on Ubuntu 12.04.
What I see using <AltGr>+some_key is that two buttons combinations works fine, so:
<AltGr>+e = €
<AltGr>+v= @
<AltGr>+w = |
etc.

But three key combinations are not working. In order to type in German umlauts in my keyboard I need to type:
<AltGr>+¨+a = ä
This tree key combination is typed in in the following way: press and hold <AltGr> and press ¨ key (at this moment no character is displayed in screen), then <AltGr> key can be released and press key a - after pressing a character ä is displayed.

This three key combination I can perfectly normally type in into following program: Gedit, Terminal, Firefox and LibreOffice Write and in all of this applications character ä can be typed in. The only application I am unable to type in is Pinta.

P.S. I have also made above test on Pinta v1.3 on Windows XP and there is the same problem as on Ubuntu. I have also tried to copy character from other application like LibreOffice Write and character is correctly pasted in Pinta. So the only problem I see now is characters can't be directly typed into Pinta using Text tool.
