Bug Description

I repeated this problem several times to "simplify" (isolate) the issue and
it goes as follows:
1. startup Pinta (ver: 1.6)
2. File > Open
3. select Desktop
4. select file "Sleepy Joe vs. Dopey Don.png"
5. select Open
6. From Tools menu - select Rectangle Select
7. ATTEMPT to select some area of image ...
(8.) program crashes - exits to OS

Note: running POP OS version of Ubuntu (current updates)

This is probably a duplicate of bug 1786822
You could try installing an updated version of Mono from https://www.mono-project.com/download/stable/#download-lin, or using the Snap / Flatpak packages

Thank you Cameron White. The problem was fixed by using
the techniques suggested "using the Snap / Flatpak" as
found at: https://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2020/08/pinta-image-editor-back-from-the-dead
after which my Pop OS, after rebooting showed an "update"
which (replaced?) my Pinta 1.6 with Pinta 1.6 (???)
but repeating the testing it now worked correctly !
It seems that this is a long known problem with a long known
'fix' ... too bad it hasn't been reflected in the recent
builds of Ubuntu and keeps causing problems for users and
for those of you who understand what is going on INSIDE all
of these complex systems. ;-) Thank You ! :-)
