Thanks for the report - is there a crash log / error message that's produced?

No, no error message. I don't know about a crash log, but there are no dialog boxes that appear after it crashes. It just closes the program unexpectedly without any message or warning.

OK, thanks.
If it crashes immediately on switching to the text tool, it might be some font that is installed on your system - would you be able to provide a list of the fonts on your system (there should be a font list in the Control Panel, I think)

Also, if you've used earlier versions of Pinta such as 1.6, did the crash occur then?

I've taken screenshots of the list of fonts installed on the computer from the Control Panel. There are 186 listed, and the composite screenshot is in .PNG format.

I did use v1.6 on another computer, but it is a newer computer and runs 64-bit Windows instead of 32-bit. I also have Pinta 1.7 downloaded on macOS 10.15 Catalina, but I haven't had a problem with the text tool on either of those computers. This is the first time I've experienced a problem like this with any version of Pinta.

Having the same problem on Windows 7 Professional SP-1 (64-bit) using Pinta 1.7.

Here is a list of my fonts (attached).

Do you have a solution for this yet and if so where do I find it?

David, we don't know why this problem appears on some installations. Are you willing to test Pinta 1.8 currently in development? If you are, please download:
https://github.com/PintaProject/Pinta/releases/download/dev-preview-builds/Pinta-1.8-dev34.exe

Currently Pinta 1.8-development is pretty stable, I am using it on daily basis as my primary image editor. Pinta 1.8 uses whole new technology and is way less dependent on operating system libraries. There were also some fixes related to Text and may well this problem be fixed.

If you are willing to test, then please after install:
1. Start Pinta
2. Menu Help | About and make sure this is really Pinta 1.8 version (and not your currently 1.7 installed version).
3. Do some tests with Text that crashes Pinta 1.7.
4. Please report back if problem is fixed in Pinta 1.8.
5. If Pinta 1.8 is good enough for you, then I advice you to use it instead of Pinta 1.7.

Hi Guys,
I installed PINTA 1.8 successfully but when using the Text tool, I got the same error message and PINTA crashed. I'll use something else to add text to my images but will be interested when you finally resolve this issue, so I'll remain subscribed to this bug.

Good luck,

Dave.

I am running Pinta 1.7 in Windows 10 Enterprise 2016 LTSB. I have the same problem as David Harris. When I click on the text button, Pinta stops executing creating a Windows "unknown software exception" window. I did not try Pinta 1.8.

This exact bug also affects me on Ubuntu 20.04.3 LTS. Both pinta versions 1.6 and 1.7 are affected.

I assume it's some kind of font loading issue. The terminal shows no output upon crash. The system logs seem to not contain anything relevant to pinta's crash.

Does the same crash occur with the GTK3 builds from https://github.com/PintaProject/Pinta/releases/tag/dev-preview-builds?

Thanks for confirming, I think this is an issue fixed in the GTK3 port of Pinta (the upcoming 1.8 release)
