Pinta Crashes on Startup on Mac OS 10.11.6

After installing the recommended Mono framework (http://download.mono-project.com/archive/3.12.1/macos-10-x86/MonoFramework-MDK-3.12.1.macos10.xamarin.x86.pkg) and Pinta 1.6, it crashes on startup with "Pinta quit unexpectedly" message. I'm on freshly installed OSX El Capitan with no other Mono apps or versions installed. I took below from generated crash report in case helpful:

Does this still occur with the latest Mono builds (https://www.mono-project.com/download/stable/) ? It seems okay for me, although I installed mono via Visual Studio
