Good to know Phil you traced the problem.

As you discovered cluster is sensitive to data-inconsistency. Any such inconsistency is handled in cluster through a shutdown.

I will close this ticket for now. Do let us know if you face any other issues in future.

BTW if you are trying PXC then why not evaluate new PXC-5.7.
It is feature rich and performance optimized with around 10x performance improvement (compared to 5.6).
