This documentation page is unclear on two things:
- the feature is mostly infrastructure in the code, i.e. it enables other InnoDB parts to submit merged I/O requests - as such it's mostly invisible to user
- the only InnoDB code that makes uses of this feature is linear readahead - that is the only part that is visible to users
