Launchpad offers PPAs, which appears to be just the right tool for quite some of the targetted audience: - Well supported and integrated by Debian and Ubuntu. - PPAs contain "real" Debian packages, so having a PPA makes sure packaging for Debian works. - Can be updated automatically, so not much burden for package maintainers.
