It looks like the JabberID tag is absolutely necessary or pastebinit will complain. The tag can be empty. Wouldn't it be good if pastebinit just silently ignored the tag not being present?

yes. it's a feature request.
any missing field/tag in the configuration file ~/.pastebinit.xml should not give an exception.

may be use elementree module (xml.etree.ElementTree) to parse the config file. it might be easier with it.
