Accessing Print (function) in key applications in Freya is difficult for new users and is very inconsistent amongst the key applications that users will use frequently. Users should rightly expect a beautiful and carefully crafted OS like Elementary OS to have a consistent and intuitive approach to UX around a common function like Print.
Expected and consistent UX for Print:
1. Context menu on right click in body of app (open document/page/email) MUST include Print
2. 'Cog-wheel' menu MUST include Print
3. Either 'Top bar' SHOULD have Print icon button or Share icon like Scratch containing Print option
4. Top bar COULD be customisable on right-click to select Share, Print or other buttons
[Impact]
Lack of intermediately visible access to Print (and or Sharing) - which is something Users will rightly expect - seriously damages the real usability problems, seriously frustrates users in day-today use and goes against the core ethos, values and reasons for existence of Elementary OS. Freya should not go to release without some serious love and attention in this area! If days can be spent on rounding corners then this needs at least that level of attention!
[Test Case]
- Open Document Viewer (Evince), Midori, Geary, and Scratch
Scorecard for expected and consistent UX for these 3 apps:
Document Viewer (Evince) - score 1/4 - 25%
1. Context menu on right click in body of app (open document/page/email) MUST include Print - FAIL
2. 'Cog-wheel' menu MUST include Print - PASS
3. Either 'Top bar' SHOULD have Print icon button or Share icon like Scratch containing Print option - FAIL
4. Top bar COULD be customisable on right-click to select Share, Print or other buttons - FAIL
Midori - score 1/4 - 25%
Geary - score 0/4 - 0%
1. Context menu on right click in body of app (open document/page/email) MUST include Print - FAIL
2. 'Cog-wheel' menu MUST include Print - FAIL
3. Either 'Top bar' SHOULD have Print icon button or Share icon like Scratch containing Print option - FAIL
4. Top bar COULD be customisable on right-click to select Share, Print or other buttons - FAIL
N.B. 'Down arrow' icon button that includes Print option in open email is arguably not intuitive for new users and could be interpreted as Download(?) perhaps better to use 'hamburger' icon?
Scratch - score 1/4 - 25%
1. Context menu on right click in body of app (open document/page/email) MUST include Print - FAIL
2. 'Cog-wheel' menu MUST include Print - FAIL
3. Either 'Top bar' SHOULD have Print icon button or Share icon containing Print option - PASS
4. Top bar COULD be customisable on right-click to select Share, Print or other buttons - FAIL
