With all this renaming going on, what is going to happen if:
1. One of these applications is replaced by another one?
Will the new application be renamed to the generic name?
2. How are clashes with names avoided in this case?
3.I've noticed that, after noise has been renamed to Music (or Musik in the german localization), it can still only be accessed using the name noise from the terminal. How then is, in the future, a user to know that this programm used to be called noise and is therefore accessible only with this name (from the terminal) and neither with the english generic name (which would allow localization independent call of this application, eg. in scripts) nor with the localized name?

I think this can be approached with a "this application occupies this role" rather than "this applications is this name". Shotwell is still Shotwell but it occupies the role of managing pictures and photos. Therefore it is named so. Should Shotwell be replaced, the role has not changed, therefore the new application is renamed for it.

An army is made of soldiers and soldiers have their own names. But if you need a soldier you can call any soldier of a platoon. :)

It is just a little abstraction and I guess it works in that the system-calls for that application remain "noise" or "shotwell" or whatever, and so the name wouldn't clash with any other installed programs.

How to fix what you report with number three? Aliases. Simple create an alias music which starts the default music program. The same for the others. This last item you mention sounds like a bug, to me.
