missing key combination for selecting indiv. messages without opening it

The up/down keys open messages right away.

Scrolling of message with Shift-up/down already works for selecting multiple messages without opening them.

Ctrl-up/down could thus be the corresponding keys for scrolling around while having only the current message selected without opening it in the 3rd pane.

I don't know how selecting several individual messages could work, though.

(IMHO keeping browsing (up/down), opening (space/enter/touch), selecting (shift space/enter/up/down, ctrl space/enter), and modifying (right-click/long-touch) as universal and clearly separated concepts seems saner.)
