Bug Description

At the moment badges show unread messages, not new messages. This makes them pretty useless as alerts in most cases. I will always have badges on my Inbox, Spam, and Trash folders (gmail filters) and I never remember what the last count was.

In order to make badges useful so that they only point out parts of the UI that haven't gotten my attention yet, they should only show the number of *new* messages since I last visited that UI, not the number of *unread* messages since all time.

Fabian is bringing up concerns in Slack that he does want to know the exact number of unread messages. A potential compromise is adding another style to distinguish "new" vs "just unread" badges.
