SMB share jpeg files don't have icon preview

Bug Description

I have two Samba servers. From Files, browse Entire Network - by default servers are then connected by Public FTP. Using FTP, some files will open, some not. May be a permissions issue...but I can't find a consistent pattern to it. In particular, no jpeg files will preview or open (the host application opens but will not load the files).

So, from Files - Connect to Server - Type [Windows Share] - By IP address. All connects ok, files will now open ok, however jpegs do not have icon preview. The same file copied to local storage does have icon preview. Obviously with a network share directory full of gbytes of photos, icon preview of the images is vital.

My Windows 7, 10, and osX machines can all access and preview the photos over the network.

Hello Jason: Could you check the setting "org.pantheon.files.preferences.show-remote-thumbnails"? This should allow thumbnailing of jpeg over smb (and ftp but not video files). At the moment this setting defaults to "false".

If you right-click on a remote folder you should get a "show remote thumbnail" entry in the context menu if you have a recent enough Files version.

Changed in pantheon-files:
status: New → Incomplete
tags: added: networking thumbnails

'gsettings set org.pantheon.files.preferences show-remote-thumbnails true' solved it, thanks.

Although I don't have the option in a context menu for remote directories in Files - my Files version is 0.3.0.2. My Elementary OS was downloaded last week.

Thanks for the help, and all the best.

The context menu option was added in r2131 so you should have it. Note it only appears when right clicking on the background of a remote folder (except for certain protocols like mtp://)
