Bug Description

Currently running the latest 64-bit Loki with pantheon-files. It will not display any thumbnails for pictures of any file format even if they are moved to a different file location. In all other applications in the OS thumbnails are displayed.

Are the files on a remote location? Files will not thumbnail these by default although a setting may be changed to show them (org.pantheon.files.preferences.show-remote-thumbnails) using dconf-editor or otherwise.

Hi Jeremy,

No the files are located locally and the issue happens when the files are located in the Downloads folder and the Pictures folder.

I have tried restarting the system and performing an update via the software update tool + via Terminal however neither of these has resulted in my pictures displaying thumbnails.

The photos are a combination of PNG and JPG files.

OK, thanks for the extra information. Could you confirm whether when you go in the Properties Window (from the context menu) for an image file, the image shows OK on the preview tab?

I checked the latest version of Files in the daily updates and it had no trouble thumbnailing png and jpg files - it also regenerated the thumbnails if ~/.cache/thumbnails/normal was emptied.

The only one's that were not thumbnailed were those without user read permission.

You may not get a preview tab in the Properties Window actually - I forgot it has been discontinued recently.

Could you look in ~/.cache/thumbnails/normal to see if thumbnails are being generated? (Note that thumbnails cannot themselves be thumbnailed - this is normal).

Maybe there is a problem with dbus (Files communicates with the system thumbnailer over dbus).

You could try reinstalling the thumbnailer (tumbler) and the extra backends (tumbler-plugins-extra)?

Thanks for the update.

I've resolved the bug by launching pantheon-files in terminal as root, then deleting the ~/.cache/thumbnails folder.

Not sure what could have caused this to happen but it is now displaying thumbnails normally again.

Thank you for the assistance.

Good to hear you fixed the problem - sounds like maybe the wrong permissions on the thumbnails folder - was it copied from another installation?

Anyway, I'll mark this as invalid as there is no evidence it is a Files bug.

Thanks for your help Jeremy. The installation was a fresh install with no transfer of data from another install. The files were downloaded from the web.
