Bug Description

Sometimes, backspace behaviour in pantheon-files breaks. It starts to move in ~ or / instead the parent folder. Example in attachment video. This fixed by killing background pantheon-files process.

I have not been able to reproduce this. Please confirm which revision of Files you are using.

I reported this a while back, and Jeremy submitted and merged a fix. I cannot reproduce on the latest daily.

Hello Kirill. You say it happens "sometimes". Have you noticed any common thing that you have done, or that has happened, before the problem starts occurring?

I can reproduce this with mounting usb harddisk then go inside of some folders then hit "Backspace" send me to my home directory (~/) root not parent folder of usb harddisk.

Hmm, I briefly managed to get Files into a state where it seemed to go back two places in the history for every "BackSpace" - but I do not know how and I cannot now reproduce it, even on a usb harddisk.

I have tried various methods of navigation (clicking on folder icons, selecting and pressing space, selecting and pressing enter, using bookmarks).

Özgür, Kirill: Does this bug also occur if you use "Alt+LeftArrow" instead of "BackSpace" to go back in history?

Özgür, Kirill: When this bug is occurring, try pressing the back browser button in the header bar to go back in history. Does it still navigate to the wrong place?

Jeremy: "Alt+LeftArrow" & "Back browser button" working how expected. Just backspace button have that behavior.

Btw at the beginning of session everything was smooth and I could not reproduce it until I try to connect ssh from files (ass you know there is a bug and you can't connect sftp directories) and then force to close files. After force close I reproduce this backspace behavior.

Özgür: Thanks, that gives a clue where the problem might lie. Theoretically, if you close Files then the navigation history should be cleared. Are you sure the pantheon-files process ended? Sometimes the application appears to have closed (no mark on plank icon) but the process is still running. When "Backspace" takes you somewhere unexpected, is it always somewhere you have recently visited (so would be in the navigation history) or can it be somewhere completely new?

I think it happens while process not dead and running on backround like you describe. For me backspace always return to home (~) directory.

The linked branch fixes the unexpected background process problem and, hopefully, will fix this one as well, judged by the last comment by Özgür.
