no thumbnail preview on network drive

When connecting to my network cloud drive, files explorer does not show a thumbnail preview. There is also no option to turn this on. In Ubuntu you could turn it on in preferences but that does not exist here. I have several gigs of family photos on this drive and navigation is impossible without a preview thumbnail.

this is likely an issue with pantheon-files (a marlin fork), I know there's a gsettings value of:

org.gnome.nautilus.preferences show-image-thumbnails 'local-only'

which has the option to change to "always", but nothing under Files. does changing this to 'always' do anything for you? some settings are shared sometimes.

I cannot change the value to 'always'. In the dconf program when I click on 'local-only' there is no other options to select. I tried using terminal to change it to 'always' manually but it says that the value is not recognized.

Update to this issue, I installed nautilus to try and change the show-image-thumbnails setting. I was able to change this to 'always' in the nautilus preferences. Then when I checked dconf it was changed there as well, however if you click on the setting in dconf although it shows as 'always' there is still only the option of 'local only'. Now I can see the thumbnail preview using nautilus but the files program still does not show the preview.

At present Files does not thumbnail remote drives to keep network traffic down and speed up, but it is perhaps something that should be an option, either as a setting and/or by having a hot-key or menu option "Thumbnail this directory".

The linked branch introduces the setting "show-remote-thumbnails" linked to a hotkey (currently <Ctrl><Shift>T)
