The following code fails for me (Panda3D 1.9.0 custom build, also with Panda3D 1.9.0 and Panda3D 1.8.1):

This is true, we do not currently support 16-bit images via TIFF. Patches welcome. In the meantime, you can write out 16-bit PNG files successfully.

It isn't supposed to crash, though. I checked in a fix on the 1.9 branch (will merge this weekend, hopefully). It now just silently downsamples to 8-bit.
