Workaround - use regular scrollbars (better than nthing):

gsettings set com.canonical.desktop.interface scrollbar-mode normal

To go back to overlay scrollbars:

gsettings set com.canonical.desktop.interface scrollbar-mode overlay-auto

Note: 'gsettings reset com.canonical.desktop.interface scrollbar-mode' with Gnome 3.8 installed set's the normal, not overlay mode on my system.

Thanks, but I love the little devil! After all it is one reminder that this is NOT Windows!
So I purged gnome3 ppa. That solved the scrollbar problem.
Unity Tweak Tool (miracoulously & unecpectantly) solved the (despite the purge) remaining two: wallpapers and suspend!
Thanks again.
