 - Adopt this commit into a 5.1 patch (was coded but never went mainline)
 Status: Done (Arjen) except for minor cleanup (anyone can pick up)

 - Backport to 5.0 to assist current production users.
 Anyone can pick up: minimal code... you'll just need to move test/result files to their 5.0 locations, stuff like that...

patch extracted/imported/cleaned, now applies to 5.1.28-rc (apart from a few test result file patch fails)
