The manual contains 'rpc_backend = rabbit' but I had to use 'notification_driver = rabbit'. Also there is no auth_uri option in the configuration the auth_host, auth_port and auth_protocol covers the same information.

According to the (somewhat vague) glance documentation, you should set "notification_driver = messaging" and "rpc_backend = rabbit" to achieve notifications using RabbitMQ.

Keystone uses the "auth_uri" key for middleware services. Contrary to appearance, it performs functions separate from the "auth_*" keys.

Dear Matt,

Thank you for your response. It is a little bit confusing that there is
no rpc_backend (nor in commented form) in the default Ubuntu 14.04
packaged configuration. The same is true for auth_uri.

The example configuration files for glance aren't very complete.

Upon further investigation, notifications from glance only appear useful to ceilometer. We should remove notifier configuration from the glance installation chapter because not all users install ceilometer and the associated queue could become large without a consumer. Also, the glance ceilometer agent section covers notifier configuration.

    In the glance chapter of the installation guide, we configure
    the notifier to use messaging. Glance notifications only appear
