Bug Description

Pitivi, and openshot kdenlive are three non-linear editor, two of them even use the same framework (MLT).
Being useful software for the same purpose (video editing) should use a common project file format.

Hello Rico,

Many thanks for your suggestion.

We have been having some discussions about the format of the project files within OpenShot, and it was agreed that for the moment we will not be changing the format because there are other more pressing issues to be addressed.

However This is a very valid and useful suggestion, and so I am going to convert this to a bug report so we can add it to the wishlist.

I am unsure how long it will be before anyone will be able to look into this.

Best wishes, Helen

MLT natively already loads kdenlive files because they are simply an extension of MLT XML. To see what I mean, create one in kdenlive and then 'melt the.kdenlive' and it plays. So, all you need to do load a kdenlive file as a clip (not a project) is to not prevent it from being loaded. Same goes for Kino SMIL XML, which again, is already natively supported by MLT.

I think it would be better to write a tool that converts various other non-linear video editor file formats to OpenShot's file format. The tool could be run from within OpenShot or from the command line. This would allow the tool to be maintained relatively independently of OpenShot. It would also allow it to be tested independently.

- kdenlive
- cinerlerra
- kino
- etc.

OpenShot would simply run the tool to import the video. This way you wouldn't have to import it as a clip; you would get all the transitions, separate files, and so forth as tracks in OpenShot.

OpenShot can already import kdenlive projects, so I'm closing this ticket. In the future, we would like to add support for EDL (edit decision lists), which are more generalized ways (and more standard) than supporting different application project files.

This bug **needs** to be reopened!

I cannot open .kdenlive files whatsoever in OpenShot!

There is NO help on the OpenShot forum or in the documentation.

I even tried renaming the .kdenlive file to an .osp extension and NOTHING. Spits out an error.

So this bug IS valid. I am gonna click "this affects me too"

Don't tell me this is invalid. (yes I'm upset. When someone tells me that something works and I have tried everything... in Texas we call those people LIARS.)
