Bug Description

1) OS Name & Version (i.e. Ubuntu 9.10, Fedora 12, etc...)
Ubuntu 10.10
2) Installation Method (i.e. DEB, PPA, Build Wizard, or Don't Know)
deb - official ubuntu repo
3) Version of OpenShot (i.e. Help > About)
1.2.2
4) Attach a "openshot.debug" file (optional)... See the FAQ link above for details.
Whenever I import many videos to project, UI is non responsive till import finishes. From my point of view some indicator/progressbar should be displayed that would present progress of import process in a nice way.

Interesting idea. I wonder where this new progress bar might live. Feel free to use Gimp (or similar image editor) to mock-up how this might look in your perfect world. =) Thanks!

no clear idea from my side where to have it in UI placed,

but in general I see 2 possible solutions for this:
- blocking one - have small modal window in front (maybe with cancel/stop button existing) => progressbar displayed & no UI updates possible in the meantime or
- non blocking one - some status-bar progress bar only, but for this I'd propose to have task running in separate thread => UI is responsive, would be more for a notification purposes

in fact I probably would preffer for daily usage the second option, in case someone imports huge number of vids, he/she might would like to continue in other work meanwhile.

also to mention, would be fine to have somewhere near the progressbar task beeing executed described => it's clear what task the progress bar is indicating progress of.

that's it from my side, feel free to comment on these ideas

I did a patch over 1.4.3alpha1 and suggested it in a blueprint.
"Provide a way to tell the user why the GUI is busy"
see link on the bottom right end.

I goes a little further as loading files is not the only 'delayed' action in openshot.
Could anyone try it and tell me if it helps?

Thanks,

@battmanux - I had a look at your patch, and like the way it provides some feedback to the user. I don't think the video window tab is the best place for the notifications though.
We are almost ready to release 1.4.3, so what I suggest is we hold this over to v1.5, which will be our GTK3 version. Then we can find somewhere more visible to put the notifications, as the GTK3 port involves plenty of gui changes anyway.

as 1.4.3 is out, is made a small change to my proposal: text message is below file tree. File tree is where I am looking for changes most of the time. see http://bazaar.launchpad.net/~battmanu/+junk/openshot/revision/689
