I quote Gour: in/out points are useful *before* you put the clip in the timelime. After this, obvioulsy, you can use cutter tool or resize tool.
For me the best solution is the kdelive solution that is the same of FinalCut and other NLEs.
Cinerella on the other hand force you to do a "clip" and then drag the clip in the timeline, while Kdenlive makes things faster and simpler.
