Bug Description

When starting OpenShot, some of the icons on the toolbar are missing. They can be brought back by placing the mouse over them, or (un)maximizing the window. Similarly, this also happens when a pop-up window appears.

Ubuntu 9.10
OpenShot 1.0.0

Very strange. Are you running compiz or some kind of desktop effects? You
might try disabling desktop effects and see if that helps. I have not seen
this issue before, so I wonder if it might be related to a video card
perhaps.

Tried using metacity instead of Compiz. Didn't fix the issue.

My GPU is a GeForce 220GT and I'm using the OpenShot-edge PPA, if that helps.

Could you please attach a screenshot or two that shows the problem. It
might help to see what you are seeing. Thanks.

What have you when you launch Openshot in a terminal window , please, post

Thanks

I'm also using the default human theme.
To make the icons and toolbar disappear, add and remove a marker.

The Icons will be redrawn on hover over, but the toolbar will not be repainted until clicked on or until the screen is re-painted.

Victor,
Can you share your desktop settings: Such as resolution, icon theme, compiz / metacity, distrubution... such as Ubuntu and which version, etc... Anything related to the way your icons, themes, and desktop is using. I will try and setup the same desktop, and see if I can reproduce the problem.

Also, it would be helpful for you to try and change your theme, icon theme, compiz to metacity, or metacity to compiz, etc... and see if any of those things change this behavior in OpenShot.

Thanks!

Hi Jonathan,

First thanks for a great program.
I have Ubuntu Maverick on x86_64 and Compiz with effects enabled.
Screen resolution is 1366x768.
The icons disappear when I have a custom theme with ClearlooksClassic controls, e.g.
Radiance theme with ClearlooksClassic controls. Just Radiance theme is fine.
It has definitely something to do with controls because not only icons disappear but also
the tab captions (Project Files, Transition, Effects) until you hover over them.

HTH,
Victor

Hello,

Same problem here since way back in time.
For the record;

Nvidia graphics
1920x1080
Arch Linux
Metacity (with and without compositing)

My findings are;

The problem indeed stems from the clearlooks engine window controls (any theme using the clearlooks engine for controls appears to have the same issue).

To be more specific, this section of the gtkrc file (~/.themes/your_theme/gtk-2.0/gtkrc).

 engine "clearlooks" {

  colorize_scrollbar = TRUE

  reliefstyle = 0

  menubarstyle = 0

  toolbarstyle = 1

  animation = TRUE

  radius = 0.0

  style = GUMMY }

OpenShot will display icons correctly with the above instance. But if we change “toolbarstyle = 1”
 to “toolbarstyle = 0” the icons will not be drawn on OpenShot start-up.

Not all themes that use clearlooks (for controls) will have this section as shown. Some I have seen just use (for example);

 engine "clearlooks" {

  radius = 0.0
  }

Which will again cause problems with icons on start-up (adding the top section of code to this bottom example in the gtkrc file will fix the issue without affecting the theme too much).

I hope my findings help.
Best wishes to the OS team and fellow OS users.

Not only do the icons and tabs keep vanishing, but now the slider marker on the timeline keeps going invisible too.
Very annoying, as it makes it almost impossible to know where I am in the timeline if the slider is not there.
Icons disappearing is a pain too, as I forget what they are and what I can do.

I have finally found the cause of this nasty bug, and squashed it! It was caused by updating our icon theme (when launching), and for some reason, any ClearLooksClassic control theme would stop drawing the icons at that point. I re-arranged a few commands, and wait until the last step to update the icon theme, and that seems to work great. This will be included in version 1.4.1. Thanks!
