Bug Description

similar to bug#442647
ubuntu 9.10 karmic 32bit, OpenShot (version 0.9.53) installed from experimental bleeding edge ppa.

i installed openshot with one of the methods prior to the experimental bleeding edge ppa being released, and i edited video from a flip ultraHD and exported to DVD format just fine. i can't recall which method i used, but it could have been either the 9.04 deb or the dev ppa for 9.10. at any rate, i had a previous version installed. i recently bought a kodak zi8 and wanted to try editing video from it in openshot. at the same time i noticed you released the experimental bleeding edge ppa that is supposed to work for 9.10 32bit without breaking other programs, so i wanted to try that. openshot kept crashing whenever i tried to export video to Youtube-HD and Vimeo-HD presets. i think i've narrowed it down to having to be related to the audio codecs, but i'm not sure what to do. i am able to export to the Flickr-HD preset just fine, which uses the same video codec i think but ac3 audio, and it plays in totem. if i pick the Vimeo-HD or Youtube-HD presets and change the audio to ac3 they export fine as well. i tried to read around to figure out what i might need to do to fix this, and ended up completely removing all packages related to mlt, ffmpeg, x264, openshot, and then reinstalling openshot and letting it pick its dependencies from the bleeding edge ppa. anyway here is what i found from running openshot in verbose mode from the terminal, my comments after //

Do you have the "x264" package installed? Also, have you tried using
"ffmpeg" to convert some video to libx264 codec?

Let's try this command, and see if libx264 works with MLT:
$ melt -verbose -profile dv_pal_wide /home/jonathan/Desktop/example.avi
-consumer avformat:/home/jonathan/Desktop/example.mp4 acodec=mpeg2 ab=128k
ar=44100 f=mp4 vcodec=libx264 minrate=0 b=900k

at the time, i did. i listed the version installed at the bottom of my first post.
since my last post i have tried a few things: removed everything (openshot, mlt, ffmpeg, x264) completely. then i started over with the build wizard. once i realized that the build wizard tells you the wrong path to run openshot from, i got it open and then had a problem where it crashed at the end of encoding Youtube-HD preset. then i removed everything again and re-enabled the developer ppa and installed from there. openshot was then crashing on startup. i then removed everything again, disabled the developer ppa and reenabled the experimental ppa and installed from there. i had was at the same point as i was with my first post, nothing had changed. then i found references saying to install all of the "unstriped" libav packs, so i did that (pretty much everything that has -unstripped in synaptic). now i don't get the x264 error, but i get the libfaac error:

i tried the metacafe preset and had no errors, and perfectly rendered video. metacafe uses libmp3lame, so i then rerendered with the Youtube-HD preset but changed the audio to use libmp3lame, and it rendered perfectly:

i tried your command and i get "melt: command not found"
also, the video files from my zi8 are in .MOVs, but i don't know if that'll matter. i do have a .mp4 from my latest rendering with Youtube-HD wth libmp3lame.

i also installed the open from the ppa and had same proble. I made a custom build of ffmpeg and x264 while the native ubuntu versions are stripped and cant encode with faac while its restricted driver. But that didnt help. It seems like the problem is inside the mlt package. It needs to be rebuilt cause the native ubuntu version is also stripped

i don't understand your question. i am doing this all on one computer, and i've installed openshot the following ways on this computer with the following results:
installed openshot from build-wizard, chose 9.04 32bit (option 3?) then chose the git build of ffmpeg (option 3?) - crash at end of export
completely removed openshot, mlt, ffmpeg, x264 packages
installed openshot from developers ppa - crashed at startup. deleted the .openshot folder, no change
completely removed openshot, mlt, ffmpeg, x264 packages
installed openshot from experimental ppa - can export x264 with ac3 audio, crashes at start of export with libaac or libmp3lame audio
installed all unstripped libav packages - now openshot can export x264 (and does not say x264 not found as it did before) but still crashes with libfaac audio, exports with no errors perfectly with x264 and libmp3lame audio
installed melt to get your output, did not change the behavior of openshot at all

i redid the command jonathan suggested above with these results:

With this commands, we tried (Jonathan and me) to help you. More you are precise more we are some lucks to help you.
This commands tell us severals things.
First, the melt wasn't installed and it's the reason why you haven't none answer to the Jonathan's commands.
Seconds, you have a big probleme with ffmpeg and libx264 same if it's installed.(libx264 for the audio and ffmpeg for mp3)
Third you have done severals installations with severals methods and i think that you have some "remainders".
What can you do ? It's a good question.
Perhaps tried in virtualbox or tried another things. Do you use the medibuntu depot for ffmpeg (Penguin Liberation Front) ?
if not installed it and update your packets and tried again.
if not good you can all de-installed (openshot and his dependencies) same their are hided (see here for mlt : https://bugs.launchpad.net/openshot/+bug/480894 and .openshot in /home) and re-installed by the ppa (the last)
After, really i don't know. Good luck

sigh, after looking around regarding this issue, i found a forum thread saying that ffmpeg and libfaac don't play nice in karmic, so i have to compile ffmpeg from source and enable it. i'm trying that now and will report back.

first off: i'm doing this now on a netbook with karmic installed. i compiled and installed x264 and ffmpeg from source following this how-to:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=786095

now, i completely uninstalled openshot and mlt. i looked at the other bug report and i followed the advice there and there is no trace of mlt or openshot anywhere on my system. i did "sudo updatedb" and "locate openshot" and "locate mlt" and there are only listings for the apt repos and such (and stuff like htmltree)

now i can do the following command:
rgoebel@rgoebel-netbook:~$ ffmpeg -i 818_1448.MOV -acodec libfaac -ab 128k -ac 2 -vcodec libx264 -vpre hq -threads 0 output.mp4

as an update, i did the same things on the desktop and have the same result. it's hard for me to believe that anyone can use libfaac for audio, from what i've seen with people having issues with libfaac in karmic period. if i can use ffmpeg to convert the original video file to a file with x264 and libfaac, i don't think it's ffmpeg or x264 at all. something else must not be right.

You have do the right things and it's work. Now the probleme seems to be another thing.
Have you tried to encode in cli and after with openshot another file in HD but this file doesn't come of your camera ?
And now a stupid question: Have you tried advanced export (it seems me that you use preset youtube-HD) ?
i note one thing that i can't understand on this resultes :

Each time it appairs "no frame" Why ?

i have no idea what it means when it says "no frame" but what i do know is that "no frame" is not causing the export to fail.

here is some more info about these videos: directly from the camera, the kodak zi8, it is a file in .MOV container, and the video codec is x264, and the audio codec is aac. i can even use ffmpeg to change the container to .mp4 and set the video and audio codecs to "copy" and it works fine.

i do use the advanced export features. in fact what works for me just fine is choosing Youtube-HD, switch to the advanced tab and change the video bitrate to 5MB/s and change the audio codec to libmp3lame and bitrate to 256. here is yet another video i successfully exported from openshot in this way: http://youtube.com/watch?v=frIemBdpU9k

i don't have any other video files to test this with, but if you could tell me where to get one online i'll gladly try. also, i don't know what cli commands you want me to try, but i will gladly try them if you tell me.

the main thing i don't understand is why i can "convert" the videos from my device to x264/libfaac with ffmpeg at the cli, but openshot won't do it. is it possible that openshot or mlt are calling the wrong command or operator or something for libfaac? openshot/mlt can't possibly be trying to use ffmpeg for libfaac if ffmpeg itself can do it just fine.
