If you are using old projects and they are crashing (and not with new projects) I'm afraid that they are corrupted. And they are nothing to do unfortunately.

Could you provide me a screenshot (witha tool like shutter for sample) of a search in synaptic with the term melt for sample.
I would like to be sure that you have the last version of mlt and none residue of a previous version of mlt.
