Here's a first version of an German translation. There's also a minor code change due to an issue with the german translation, and I had to update the other language files.

This is a really good effort; thanks very much!

Hi,

I have some minor improvements in mind - any deadline for 1.0?

Btw: Didn't try yet, do I have to work with patches, or do I have commit rights?

Happy christmas etc :-)

ZeroG,

Can you help out with the patch side of things?

No date for 1.0, it depends on Issues being closed and all of us agreeing that OSN is ready to go public (see Roadmap).

Cheers,

Chris.

Chris,

This idea behind this issue was to be sure that for market release every translation files were up to date to the 1.0 code. Kind of a reminder for 1.0.
The languages issues will all be checked against the 1.0 code and closed last before market release.

Christian, you currently have 2 ways of updating the DE translation.
# Attach patches to this issue
# send me by mail patches or the updated strings.xml file

Either way, I will commit to the repository.

I remember, now :-). Thanks for reminding me. Looks like submitting patches has been sorted, also.

Thanks,

Improvements to German translation

There is an issue with the german translation: "About" translates to "Über", however, the dots on top of the "U" are not visible on my Milestone. I have no idea why... Other "Umlauts" do not seem to be affected

Hi, Laias.

Any help is welcome.

I have reworked the German translation and set it to a bit more standardized German. Although it is an opensource program and people tend to use the informal 'you' with each other you can't assume the same for your customers. It just sounds very unprofessional. I also made a lot of other small changes which hopefully help to clarify a few expressions.

Hope it helps and the other German speakers agree with the changes.

Not quite sure what you want me to do. I attached a patch. I don't think that I can do any commits without a SVN accountles

These changes are of course not set in stone so please discuss the translations if you want to. All I did was make sure mannequinZOD didn't try to sneak in swear words :)

Hi!

I updated the german translation for the tripstats (Patch attached)
But there are some display problems because some words like "Average-Speed" are really long in german.("Durchschnittsgeschwindigkeit")
I attached an screenshot(emulator) of the tripstats in german.

mannequinZOD,

you might not be surprised that I do not agree on using the less formal German "Du" as being unprofessional - if this would be the case, IKEA would probably be out of the market for quite some time. Of course I thought about "Du" and "Sie", and I decided to go for "Du" since it's more friendly. But sure, it's a matter of taste...

However, despite that, I like your other changes! I therefore suggest that you add yourself to the list of translators (shouldn't be a problem to have two translators for German, should it?).

Yours,
Christian

Hi!
There are some faults with the replacemnet of "Du" with "Sie"...
Just look at Line 14 of strings.xml : "Bitte überprüfe Sie"... Sounds crazy^^
I think he just replaiced "Du" with "Sie" by the edit command of the texteditor
I will fix it next week and add my translation of the tripstats to ONE Patch.

Dear Guillaume,

as far as I can see, you can commit the last patches by Laias and mannequinZOD - the former adds translation for the statistics, the latter fixes two typos. However, after that, we might have to discuss a couple of display issues (as the one raised by Laias), and I will provide another patch against the repository state at that time.

To the other Germans:
* It looks like Durchschnittsgeschwindigkeit needs to be replaced by something shorter - any suggestions? What about Durchschnittsgeschw.? Or just Schnitt?
* Then I'm not sure about the term "Drücken Sie hier, um...", but I can't think of anything better - "Berühren Sie..."?
* There's this "Uber" in the Settings menu, which is displayed incorrectly by Android (in the text file, it's "Über") - what about that?
* We still have to Du in the text ("Wohin möchtest Du?" and "Drücke hier, ...") - I will fix that with the (hopefully) final patch.

Cheers,
Christian

You could call it "mittlere Geschwindigkeit" or if this is still to long just "Durchschnitt" in contrast to the current speed "Aktuell" or "Geschwindigkeit". If the units are displayed (km/h) this makes it crystal clear.

"Drücke hier, um den Kachel-Speicher zu leeren", should be renamed into something like this "Loeschen Sie alle gespeicherten Karten". The user clearly sees from the interface that it is a clickable element. So maybe the english string should be changed as well.

I like "Mittlere Geschwindigkeit", let's gor for this.

Good point - I have changed it to "Kachel-Speicher leeren".

The patch is attached. From my point of view, this bug can be closed for now - if anybody thinks differently, speak up! And you can double-check everything anyways - I still have fixed two typos (in one word) :-)

However, what is the long-term plan for the translation? How are you going to make sure that the language files get updated later on if needed?

Oops - take this patch. I have replaced Kachel-Speicher with Kachelspeicher since this is better German.

I totally agree. I have updated the English string in rev 141. Now it's, "Empty the map tile cache".
