Bug Description

Binary package hint: openoffice.org

I've tried Ubuntu & Fedora 10 in both OpenOffice 3.01 and OpenOffice 2.41 and the same headache. No matter what file I open up, when I switch to Web Layout from Print Layout, the page numbering goes out the window. I am looking at a document right now that claims a 310 page document is 8 pages long and I am on page 4.
On OpenOffice 3.01 an additional problem related to this bug. When searching for text in a document (and the text is found), also in web layout, the repagination function jumps the cursor in the document so much that it is impossible to do anything but watch as it counts down to 4 out of 8 pages in a 301 page document.

The format for the document is the Word 97/2000 format and I don't experience these problems at all in Print Layout.

Otherwise it is a fantastic product and I am well aware of the fact that it is free and you guys are doing a service so I try not to complain because this is a great product.

I would love to submit the document but it's a manuscript for a book I'm working on.

Here is a document that does the same thing.  That one I have no problem from sharing.

I'm not sure why it shows more than 1/1 page for you when switched to web layout. The fact it claims it is only one page makes perfect sense... as it is a webpage it is only one page, just a very long one. Unless you can clarify why you think it should be showing it as more than 1/1 page I think this is really not a bug at all.

I'm beginning to see your point.  I'll send you my manuscript -- just keep it confidential.  It's a long document.  That should clarify the bug.

Remember to switch to web layout and go from there.

davecgs,

Thanks for the document, I verified that it appears OOo adds a page break every ~ 393 inches which is roughly every 10 meters. And the display of page number for web layout is fairly useless also but displaying 1/1 isn't really a major problem.

I removed the document from the bug report after testing since it was in a publicly available location.

Thanks,

Chris

Thanks Chris. What I think the software really needs is another view (I know, I know,  you're working for free) but the page layout is clunky since it takes up so much space on the screen removing the text space.  It's more like a page preview function.  I just want to see text.  The web layout satisfies that need but removes the page numbers function entirely...which now I understand why.  Here is my suggestion and you can take it or leave it.  It's still a great product.1) Use the page layout function and rename as "page preview"2) Keep the web layout function3) Add some sort of page layout function that doesn't rob so much of the screen.Just my two cents.  Again thanks for your efforts.Dave...

davecgs,

You do know about different zoom levels and full screen mode, right? Perhaps I am just misunderstanding what you are asking for...

Hey Chris,

I do but it still doesn't quite give me the look of the web layout.  I've used Word for a long time and I'm used to that look and it just doesn't look the same even with full screen mode.  Web layout is my favorite view since it hides the non-printable area from me which I don't need to see when I'm writing.

Does that make sense?

Again Chris, thanks so much for taking the time with this issue.  I really appreciate the attention you've given me and it makes me hate Microsoft all the more since they never gave this much attention to any customer!

There are no new official OpenOffice.org releases in Ubuntu packaging anymore => Won't Fix

If the problem persists, please mark this bug as "also affects project Libreoffice" or "also affects distribution Libreoffice (Ubuntu)" if that has not happened already.

Please leave references to upstream OpenOffice.org bugs in place to allow cross pollination.
