Bug Description

Binary package hint: openoffice.org

yeah esc deselects the tool icon AND we get "no fill" but guess what? anything entered AFTER you actually highlight something (anything) continues to apply background highlight anyway. we've even tried a reload of the app after saving the file and the problem still persists on the relaunch of both the app and the document.

we're running 8.04 and the updates are current. the kernel used was the one compiled under the iso release (latest stable).

of course this bug ain't gonna come close to stop us from using this great product. and please let us know if we've missed something here regarding usage.

Do you still have this problem with 1:2.4.1~rc2-1ubuntu1 in hardy-proposed? I can't reproduce this problem on my machine.

Thanks,

Chris... well the bug still exists as initially reported on our systems. and it still exists in 2.4.1. now I've really no clue why hardware should affect what the app observes from the keyboard. however the problem exists on an ASUS P5N-SLI and a ASUS P5L-MX motherboard. It also exists on every other system here thus I seriously doubt as mentioned that this is a hardware issue in any form. not only that it also fails in the windoze version (also 2.4.1)!

perhaps I'm misunderstanding what "highlighting" IS? what I expect regarding highlighting is like taking a "highlight pen" and drawing across some text to "highlight" it in some lighter color (typically light "neon" yellow or pink) to make the text "stand out" (the BACKGROUND color of each character entered is thus modified). word for example has no issues with doing exactly what I've described here... and its what I expect "highlighting" to actually do. note that mouseover defines the word "Highlighting" within the toolbar icon hint field as well.

of course you may chose to close the "book" on it but non-the-less the problem DOES exist and its DEFINITELY within the coding. perhaps I'll take a look at it myself IF it continues in the version 3.x release (I'm assuming its written in one of my LEAST favorite languages (C++). well hopefully the code is well commented! as mentioned once the user turns the thing on from there persistence is the word of the day.

sincerely, -Lee

Lee,

It's on the launchpad bug report. If you look at the bottom of every email from the bug tracking system there is a link to the full report.

eg https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/234808

I was just asking if you could still reproduce it on 2.4.1 back about 6 weeks ago, which you already answered you are able to and that it appears to be an upstream issue since you could reproduce it on Windows as well.

Chris... right. its reproducible at will on either platform (we happen to be running winy2k with SP4+update). however the vast majority of our work is now out of the current 32bit version of ubuntu (with a rare "trip" to windows to grab data from databases originally created over there (which we've not had the time to port over)).

I think a workaround could be to highlight after you are done typing and not to try to highlight the current word as you type it, if that is indeed what you are doing. At least that was the way I was easily able to reproduce the problem.

Thanks,

Chris Cheney

There are no new official OpenOffice.org releases in Ubuntu packaging anymore => Won't Fix

If the problem persists, please mark this bug as "also affects project Libreoffice" or "also affects distribution Libreoffice (Ubuntu)" if that has not happened already.

Please leave references to upstream OpenOffice.org bugs in place to allow cross pollination.
