Bug Description

Laptop screen resolution :1280x800
VGA Output: 1024x768
Desktop, taskbar and launch-bar is nicely resized to 1024x768, even when showing on the Laptop's display.
however, when a presentation (openoffice/impress) starts, it uses the whole 1280x800 area, so the output on the projector is missing a part of the image.

the right thing to do, would be to force impress to only "see" a 1024x768 desktop... - and render to that.

I can confirm this behavior.
I have a Thinkpad T61 using Intel's GM965 X3100 display controller.
The laptop screen resolution is 1280x800.

For an external projector to work with the laptop (with cloned output) I have to resize the screen resolution to 1024x768. Doing this, nicely resizes everything to fit within both screens. However, now if I run a slide show in openoffice.org impress, the slides are not resized correctly... and parts of the slides are cut out of the display.

In fact, you do not even require an external projector to reproduce this behavior. Simply changing the screen resolution on the latop (to a lower resolution than the maximum supported) results in this bug to manifest itself.

Does this happen if you aren't running Impress at the time you change resolutions or only if it is already running when you do so?

Thanks,

Chris

Ah.... good question.

I just tried it... and the resolution of the presentation is fine if impress is started *before* the resolution of the display is changed. You're right... if impress is already running when the display resolution is changed, only then do I see the problem.

It appears that OOo needs to be aware of screen size changes while running.

By the way which version of openoffice/ubuntu do you see this problem under? Are you seeing this under Ubuntu 8.04 (hardy)?

Yes... I'm using Hardy, fully updated with all released updates.
OpenOffice version: 2.4.0 (openoffice.org-core 1:2.4.0-3ubuntu6).

yep - this is for Hardy.

BTW: starting impress first is not a "solution" - as Impress sometimes crashes on presentations with large pictures/video - and need to be restarted.

Ummm... I think I misspoke above. Here's (hopefully with more clarity) what works, and what doesn't.

The OOo presentation works okay, if you
(1) Make sure OOo is closed.
(2) Change the display resolution (before starting OOo) (optionally, attach any external projector(s))
(3) Then start OOo, and start the presentation.

The OOo presentation does *not* fit in the screen if you
(1) First start OOo
(2) Then change the display resolution (optionally, attach any external projector(s))
(3) Then start the presentation... the presentation will not fit the screen.

Sorry about the confusion.

Aweome... looks like this bug is fixed in the latest updates today...

Thanks all.

Marking as Fix Released as Sid claims this problem has been fixed in 1:2.4.1-1ubuntu1. Please reopen if this is not the case.

I had this problem with the latest open office 3.0.1

I tried for an hour to get Impress to display the correct resolution on the projector output. It always appeared cropped. Finally, I realized that I have to start openoffice on the virtual screen that is the lowest resolution, then when I go fullscreen, it appears correctly out of the projector.

I think OpenOffice should detect the monitor being used for the presentation (lowest), then automatically change the resolution to match it. You should be able to run your presentation from the laptop monitor, and have the output appear on the other virtual screen.
